So…apparently the rapture is supposed to go down this coming Saturday – 5.21.11. We’re going to ring it in by hosting a benefit coffee tasting for one of our favorite things: Ruminate Magazine.

Quite a few coffee shops hold coffee tastings & cuppings. They are important. They teach you about what you are drinking, and that is important to know.

Everyday Joe’s wants to continue this idea, but put our twist on it. Enter: Coffee & Goodness. Each Coffee & Goodness event serves two purposes:

1. Educate you about coffee & its intricacies

2. Benefit an organization doing Good.

We’ll be serving one coffee bean four ways so you can taste it in all its glory. Admission ($8) will include a sample of each preperation: Hario V60 Pourover, Clever Coffee Dripper, French Press, and Espresso. At each brew station, there will be folks to help your palate along and tell you what tastes to be looking for.

Back a few years ago, we hosted the Ruminate Magazine launch party…& we’re so glad that our relationship with them continues. They produce good and great art and the future for them is exciting. Come down and drink coffee and learn about these good folks.

The bean this time around in the PNG Kunjin from the fellas at Novo Coffee. It’s become one of our favs as of late, and we think you’ll agree it’s definitely worth taking the time to imbibe it.

Your $8 will get you a 4 oz. sample of each of the three brew methods, plus a single espresso. The good people of Novo were kind enough to donate all the coffee for the event, so Ruminate will walk away with $7 for every person that comes through the doors. The event starts at 1 pm, and is run open house style until we’re done at 4 pm.

Come and get it.

We proudly serve the beans roasted by our friends at Novo Coffee. We call them friends, and we mean it.

Later this month, Novo will start offering cupping classes. The good people at Westword stopped by the roastery recently to learn about the cupping experience:

Novo Coffee sources and roasts some of our favorite coffee beans in town. Herb, Jake and Joe Brodsky (who went on to find Ninety Plus Coffee, a sourcing and distribution company), the father and sons behind the operation, spend a lot of time forging relationships, searching for beans and perfecting the processing — and they’re also passionate about getting the best cup of coffee possible into the hands of consumers.

Earlier today, Jake walked us through the cupping process, which is used to detect flaws in coffee and check for consistency.

Read the rest of the article here. It really is a nice, sussinct portrayal of the cupping process…which is something most folks have a hard time composing. It makes me want to go do some cupping right now.

If we started hosting more cuppings, wouldst thou join us?

People have stories, and Everyday Joe’s is in the business of listening to them. We should all be in the business of listening to them.

Our good friend Herb Brodsky (co-founder of Novo Coffee) has a story. Part of it involves three years serving on the board of the Union Cab Cooperative in Madison, WI. If we remember right, he helped start the co-op, but we might be remembering wrong. It also inolves always greeting you with his trademark “Woo!”, a spin, and a hug.

While in Wisconsin he made friends with Mr. Michael Feldman. These days, Herb works in coffee and Michael works in National Public Radio as the host of Whad’Ya Know?. Last week, Herb was back in the Great North visiting old friends and stopped by the Whad’Ya Know studio. The following transpired:

The man is an institution. Herb loves people. We love people. We love you. We love Herb. Herb loves Everyday Joe’s. Herb loves you. Woo!

You can listen to the entire Whad’Ya Know? broadcast online…and you should.

We’ve talked about coffee brewing methods here before (please refer to this and this). Various brew methods result in various delicious results. It’s a fun time.

Back in September we thought, “We want to host coffee tastings.” Then we thought, “These tastings need to be about more than coffee.” One last thought occured, “The tastings should benefit people doing good things.”

And so those thoughts formed one larger thought that was acted on and out came Coffee & Goodness. It is an afternoon of coffee exploration to benefit good things. The upcoming Coffee & Goodness (Saturday March 6) will benefit the Fort Collins Food Co-Op. We will be exploring a coffee from Ethiopia: Amaro Gayo Sun-Dried. It will be explored 4 different ways:

Hario V60 Drip

Clever Coffee Dripper

French Press

Espresso

The doors are open from 2-5 pm. Come by any time during those hours and receive 6 oz. samples of Hario, Clever, and French Press and a double shot of the espresso. You can tell us things, we can tell you things, we can exlpore the flavor wheel, we can draw pictures…all for just $7.

PLUS, our good friends at Novo Coffee have generously and graciously and lovingly donated all the beans, so nearly all of that $7 will go directly to the FC Food Co-Op. Prolific!

See you then.

This is fun.

When I think Bon Apetit magazine, my mind immediately goes to summer evenings spent watching Next Food Network Star. What I do not think is boutique coffee shops. That, apparently, has changed.

At Everyday Joe’s, we proudly and with great care serve the beans of Novo Coffee. They are good people and we love them. Apparently, Bon Apetit does as well…at least that’s what I’d surmise from Novo being bestowed a Top 10 Boutique Coffee Shop:

Found at three retail locations and many top restaurants, this Denver roaster’s product makes it easier for java junkies to buy local.

That right there is the truth, and part of the reason we switched to the roaster. Read the rest of the Bon Apetit article and then come have some coffee…because we love you too.
