Other People’s Coffee: Cave Creek, AZ – Cave Creek Coffee Company

Introducing: “Other People’s Coffee” – what hopes to be a series of posts by folks in the Everyday Joe’s community concerning coffee they have not at Everyday Joe’s, usually in other cities or states. As the number of these posts grow, it could turn into a handy little reference for knowing where to get coffee during your travels. I know I’m excited.

Coffee Shop: Cave Creek Coffee Company

Location: Cave Creek, Arizona

Drink: Double Americano, 12 oz. cup, half-full

Drinker: Chris Hess

When I leave Fort Collins, a switch flips in my brain resulting in a near-obsessive hunt for good coffee. After years of humoring me, my wife & parents have about had their fill and I now try to keep my mouth shut when we pass a coffee shop en route to somewhere else.

In order to satisfy my desire, I have had to deploy several strategies aimed at finding my fix. They include:

  • Sneaking out of a store we are shopping in if there is a coffee shop in the general vicinity. When I reappear with an Americano, I am usually asked, “Chris, where did that come from?” “I manifested it,” I reply.
  • If I happen to be driving the vehicle on our way to some place other than where I want to drink brewed beans, we may “get lost” and end up driving by the coffee shop. I can then go in and get directions, and return with a latte.
  • Spending several hours of grueling and angst-filled Googling looking for the right place.

For my recent trip to Scottsdale, Arizona, I chose to employ strategy three. At times, this strategy must be combined with one or both of the other strategies. However, on this foray to the jewel of the southwest, my wife Jessica was surprisingly willing to accompany me to the Cave Creek Coffee Company in Cave Creek, AZ.

I had a double americano. It was good. There was a nice amount of crema. They pulled the shots directly on top of the water. There was corrugated steel on all of the walls. I sat on a very large leather couch. Jes almost fell asleep on an equally large leather couch.

However, the real reason I wanted to go to C4 (which is it’s hip name) was to check out their concert venue, which has hosted several musicians that have also filled Everyday Joe’s with their musical notes. To my surprise, there were two stages…a rather small indoor stage, and a rather spectacular outdoor one. Bleacher seating towards the back, row seating up front, tables everywhere else, and the blue tarps serving as shelter from winds and dirt particles kind of make you feel like you’re in a giant McDonald’s playplace.

That’s about it concerning C4. It was a nice time, nothing less. Maybe a little bit more. Stop by if you ever find yourself in the northern Scottsdale area of the 48th state. It’ll be fun, promise.

An audio treat from Katie Herzig

In just two weeks, our dear friend Katie Herzig will be traveling back to Colorado from Nashville to play some shows for her home state. At her stop at Everyday Joe’s on April 4, Katie’s new album Apple Tree will be available as a special pre-release. You see, outside of these Colorado shows, you won’t be able to get your ears around Apple Tree until May. How’s that for fancy?

Ms. Herzig has been kind enough to send a song from the new album to Appendix E-J for your listening pleasure. Please enjoy “Songbird” in all its pre-pre-release glory. Then, buy your tickets for the show here.

The Fray? Garrison Keillor? Slayer?

our favorite band

This is the last time I’m gonna’ try this little experiment.

As the concerts at Everyday Joe’s start to come into focus for the impending summer & fall, I would like to know something.

Who would you like to see play here?

In all seriousness, tell me. Any ideas you send my way, I promise I will attempt to make happen. When it comes to contacting musicians and other talented performers about appearing at Everyday Joe’s, I have long operated under the notion that at worst we’re told no, and at best we have a nice time.

This is the task I am charging you with. Let me know who you want to see on the stage at Everyday Joe’s. Anyone, no matter how famous or not famous or used to be famous. I’ll try my darndest and I’ll buy you some ice cream if they come and play.

Reply by leaving a comment or e-mailing me. Do it, people.

Sufjan Stevens, Water, and Global Warming

At Everyday Joe’s, I dare say we love the music of Mr. Sufjan Stevens. I’d also dare say we love the idea of environmental stewardship.

Over on his e – brain blog, art director/designer Justin Young has tickled our fancy and combined the two.

Watch what I’m talking about here.

Your Itinerary for Friday Night

Fact of the matter is as follows:

Trying to figure out what you’re going to do on Friday night is the cause of stress that can be easily avoided by reading below. You’re welcome.

1) Attend Free Rice benefit show at Everyday Joe’s Coffee House, 7 pm. What the snazzy is this “Free Rice” I speak of? Well, it’s an internet craze, that’s what. Check out freerice.com and read about the show here, then we’ll see you on Friday night…don’t forget your laptop.

2) After a magnificent time at Everyday Joe’s, head over to Hodi’s Half Note (167 N. College Ave.) to watch Born In The Flood play. Those cats can shred their axes, folks. Perhaps that’s the wrong way to put it, but you’ll tap your foot & bob your head while their compositions continually poke your heart. No dizoubt. Show’s at 9 pm, and will cost you a 10-spot if you are able to purchase adult beverages…$12 if 7-up or Tab is what they’ll sell you.

See how easy that was? Thank you letters can be sent to:

New SON LUX album…oh my.

The Everyday Joe’s family tree is very extended. It’s roots are deep and it’s branches and twigs are built of many beautiful people we love very much.

Introducing: Son Lux.

Son Lux (aka Ryan Lott) is a part of the extended musical family. If a diagram existed, he could be found by following the Aaron Strumpel branch. That branch would lead you to Kate Hurley, then probably Ben & Robin Pasley, and finally a little off-shoot with Son Lux penned on it – ever so daintily. He could also be found via the Cinematic Underground branch.

After a lot of people waiting patiently for a very long time, Ryan has digitally released (physical release is March 11) his debut album At War With Walls and Mazes (anticon.) I downloaded it this morning (legally, mind you…my internet pirate days are behind me). I am now listening to it for the second consecutive time. Gorgeous.

There is no way to really describe what I am hearing at this time. If you like beats, ambient things, symphonic noises, and words all being used at the same time to gently pound truths of life into your ears & heart…then you’ve found your new headphone masterpiece. If you only like one of those things…then you’ve found your new headphone masterpiece.

Thank you, Mr. Son Lux. Thank you very, very much.

Indie Musicians Win Oscar: Count It! Begin World Domination.

once-5.jpg

The Academy Awards took place on Sunday. They were long. I had a fever and wanted nothing more than to sleep. But, I fought valiantly through set design awards and the like just so I could see the presentation for “Best Original Song.”

You see, a song from the indie-film Once was nominated. If you haven’t seen the film, you should go see it right now…unless you hate musicals…but I hate musicals and I loved the movie and the music in it. The music is great if you haven’t seen the movie, but is magnificent if you have.

Sorry for the rambling.

Anywho, the song “Falling Slowly” from Once was nominated…and it won. This, you see, is great. Why? Because the film’s stars/writers of the song – Glen Hansard (of The Frames) and Marketa Irglova – are indie musicians & perform together under the musical moniker The Swell Season. Everyday Joe’s loves indie artists to bits. That’s a fact, jack.

Here’s Irglova’s acceptance speech:

“Hi everyone. I just want to thank you so much. This is such a big deal, not only for us, but for all other independent musicians and artists that spend most of their time struggling, and this, the fact that we’re standing here tonight, the fact that we’re able to hold this, it’s just to prove no matter how far out your dreams are, it’s possible. And, you know, fair play to those who dare to dream and don’t give up. And this song was written from a perspective of hope, and hope at the end of the day connects us all, no matter how different we are. And so thank you so much those who helped us along way. Thank you.

Preach it, Chzech lady.

Hansard’s speech was also great, which is what one would expect from an extremely (though not overly) excited Irish man. You can read it here.

The Swell Season will be performing at the Ellie Caulkin’s Opera House in Denver on May 3.

Learn Things, Listen To Music, Feed The Hungry

wfp-freerice-336x280.gif

Hello friends.

At Everydizzle Jizzle’s (or Everyday Joe’s), we’re constantly looking for ways to make the world a bit better and make people feel more loved.

On February 29, we’ll be hosting a concert to benefit Free Rice, which has been dubbed an “internet craze” by the kiddos Basically, you practice vocabulary and the better you do, the more people get to eat. Exciting, yes? At the show, our friends from the Act So Big Forest musical collective will play music while you play Free Rice on your laptop. There will be prizes for the most rice given, highest vocab level, etc. All monetary donations from the evening will go to benefit the Friends of the World Food Programme (I like getting to spell program that way…how very Euro of me).

You’ve got a week. Get to practicing. Then come listen to music and give rice away, or D$ will open-hand slap the side of your neck.
