Agents Of Future: Passion Before Precision

The Agents of Future are some of my favorite people/one of our favorite bands on the face of the planet in its entirety. They were part of the 2009 90/10 Benefit. My guess is – regardless of what believe – you want some part of what they carry around with them.

Tickle Me Pink is…

Update, 7/1/08, 3:15 pm: The following post was composed and posted this morning in order to congratualte our friends in Tickle Me Pink on the release of their debut album on Wind-Up records. Just a little bit ago, we were informed that the band’s bassist, Johnny Schou, was found this morning, dead at his home. Our prayers and hearts are with everyone in the TMP family…because they are our family. We love you very, very much.

…a MySpace banner ad.

Those guys from Fort Collins that signed to the label started by those guys from Creed are starting to pop up places. For example, Everyday Joe’s friend Jon Alonzo heard them on the satellite radio while serving ice cream to sugar-addicted five-year-olds at Ben & Jerry’s.

From time to time, I like to peruse the MySpace pages of some of my favorite muscal artists to see when they might be in Colorado and if it would be possible to have them play at Everyday Joe’s. Last night I was checking on the dear Marla Hansen when I saw this:

There they are, at the top of the page in all their black & white photoshopped glory. It’s a fun time to see bands from Fort Collins succeed. I wonder where that picture was taken. Perhaps in front of The Blasting Room?

Either way, good luck to you fellows of Tickle Me Pink on this, the day your debut album “Madeline” is to be released. Everyday Joe’s loves you very much. Last time you played here, you left a guitar rack. Pick it up if you like, or we’ll hold on to it and possibly sell it one day.

Random Bits: Music In A Basement In The NYC

Update 8/24/2008: Juan’s program has moved from Plum TV to Pitchfork Media’s Pitchfork.tv (exciting and good)

I recently made a discovery. A discovery that sung directly to my heart and as a result that muscle in my chest began beaming forth the light of a choir of angels…just like in Care Bears.

There is an Argentine-American. His name is Juan. He lives in Brooklyn. He has a basement. Through some sort of sweet talking or mind tricks or plain passion, he has convinced several great indie bands to perform in his basement. The performances are filmed and broadcast on Plum TV Pitchfork.tv. I imagine his days go something like this:

“Hello Juan, what are you doing today,” friend asks.

“Oh,” says Juan. “I’m going to run and get some coffee and then Josh Ritter is coming over at 11:15 to play some music in my basement. How about you?”

Friend looks a bit confused and dazed and replies:

“I see. I was gonna’ ask if you wanted to come over and see my new IKEA furniture I just finished assembling, but you sound too busy for the Swedish innovations in home decor. I’ll talk to you later.”

House concerts are making a small ressurgance in this day and age, and are something I have dreamed of doing for a long time. Everyday Joe’s can often feel like a home. Everyone who comes in here is part of the family.

Methinks Juan’s Basement and Everyday Joe’s are distant relatives of some sort. How distant? Not sure. Regardless, get through your friday by following the links to videos from Juan’s Basement below. I’ve posted my favorite for you to view.

Random Bits: explore the musical family tree

A few of us around Everyday Joe’s subscribe to the Very Short List. VSL is always a good source for something to occupy your time while it should be occupied by something else.

Recently, VSL pointed out the site TuneGlue. It helps you explore the degrees of separation between musicians, which fascinates me to no end…especially when I begin with artists who play here at Everyday Joe’s. I’d recommend starting with Josh Dillard and seeing where it takes you.

The only gripe I’ve heard is you can’t listen to the music of the folks who pop up. Fortunately, there are a multitude of sites to help you with that. FineTune or Pandora are nice.

Enjoy. This should help get you through Thursday & Friday and back to the weekend.

Hold on there, buddy. Put that economic stimulus check back in your pocket.

Our friends in the Autumn Film are starting to make quite the name for themselves down in Denver, as well as reaching their musical tentacles out into other musical communities (Aubrea Alford plays violin on Trace Bundy’s new DVD). Audio Treat: Enter The Worship Circle

Over the years, the Everyday Joe’s family and the Enter The Worship Circle family have become quite tangled and intertwined in a sort of friendly slap fight where everyone laughs and falls down and then eats nachos together.

Last week, Enter The Worship Circle: Fourth Circle was released. It is one giant collaboration between Ben, & Robin Pasely, Jacob & Lily, Aaron Strumpel, The Blackthorn Project, and the audio engineering prowess of Dave Wilton (aboyandhiskite). A giant collaboration between those folks is most likely some sort of monumental feat. And by monumental, I do mean it could deserve a giant statue of itself.

Mr. Strumpel – being the dear that he is – has shared a track from the album with the appendix. Please enjoy “Give Me Your Hand.” It features a glockenspiel, people. Glockenspiel!

Community in Music: Act So Big Forest Hits The Front Page

If you picked up a copy of Thursday’s (5/8/08) edition of the Rocky Mountain Collegian, a couple familiar faces may have been staring back at you…or staring off into the musical distance.

Everyday Joe’s musical son Jon Alonzo and our good friend Dave Maddocks – along with the rest of the Act So Big Forest musical community – were featured in a cover story written by our very own volunteer Maggie Canty. We’ve watched most of the Forest grow up before our very eyes…Winderous Igloos, Airships, Josh Dillard, Candy Claws…the list goes on. They are an endless source of creativity and can often leave you with your head cocked to one side, a bit confused.

They are great and we love them very much. Read the article here. Paean, another member of the forest, will release their new album at Everyday Joe’s on June 6 with special guest Maxwell Hughes

Audio Treat: Brooke Waggoner

Audio treats coming out of our ears, people.

Out of ours and into yours.

This Saturday, the fantastic Brooke Waggoner will make her Everyday Joe’s debut. She makes her home in Nashville and runs around with the likes of Katie Herzig and Mute Math and Bell X1. Could she fall in the “rock star” category? No, because she’s too nice and lovely. Rock stars wouldn’t share a song with us. Very good musicians who will be well-known and probably help save the world share songs.

Show starts at 7 pm. $5 at the door, Dan Craig & The Riflemen will open the night up.

That’s enough out of me. Take a listen to “Hush If You Must.”

Audio Treat: Luke Flowers

Everyday Joe’s has a very good friend. His name is Luke Flowers

Luke lives in Colorado Springs. He is a very, very good artist. He created the art for our gift cards, the art for our punch cards, the poster and tickets for our first 90/10 Benefit, and posters for several other concerts. He’s also done album and poster artwork for Jars Of Clay, Trace Bundy, Braddigan, Newcomers Home, The Blackthorn Project, and Jonah Werner among others. He’s family. I’d give him studio space in the building if he would move here. He was featured on “Love, Everyday Joe’s- Vol. 1: No More Gloom.”

When he’s not playing with his kids or drawing pictures for a living, he makes music that is quite listenable…both as a solo artist and with his side project, SameName. New albums were recently released on both fronts, and Mr. Flowers has been kind enough to send a couple of songs to the Appendix for your listening pleasure. Have a listen, then buy the albums.

Other People’s Coffee: Cave Creek, AZ – Cave Creek Coffee Company

Introducing: “Other People’s Coffee” – what hopes to be a series of posts by folks in the Everyday Joe’s community concerning coffee they have not at Everyday Joe’s, usually in other cities or states. As the number of these posts grow, it could turn into a handy little reference for knowing where to get coffee during your travels. I know I’m excited.

Coffee Shop: Cave Creek Coffee Company

Location: Cave Creek, Arizona

Drink: Double Americano, 12 oz. cup, half-full

Drinker: Chris Hess

When I leave Fort Collins, a switch flips in my brain resulting in a near-obsessive hunt for good coffee. After years of humoring me, my wife & parents have about had their fill and I now try to keep my mouth shut when we pass a coffee shop en route to somewhere else.

In order to satisfy my desire, I have had to deploy several strategies aimed at finding my fix. They include:

  • Sneaking out of a store we are shopping in if there is a coffee shop in the general vicinity. When I reappear with an Americano, I am usually asked, “Chris, where did that come from?” “I manifested it,” I reply.
  • If I happen to be driving the vehicle on our way to some place other than where I want to drink brewed beans, we may “get lost” and end up driving by the coffee shop. I can then go in and get directions, and return with a latte.
  • Spending several hours of grueling and angst-filled Googling looking for the right place.

For my recent trip to Scottsdale, Arizona, I chose to employ strategy three. At times, this strategy must be combined with one or both of the other strategies. However, on this foray to the jewel of the southwest, my wife Jessica was surprisingly willing to accompany me to the Cave Creek Coffee Company in Cave Creek, AZ.

I had a double americano. It was good. There was a nice amount of crema. They pulled the shots directly on top of the water. There was corrugated steel on all of the walls. I sat on a very large leather couch. Jes almost fell asleep on an equally large leather couch.

However, the real reason I wanted to go to C4 (which is it’s hip name) was to check out their concert venue, which has hosted several musicians that have also filled Everyday Joe’s with their musical notes. To my surprise, there were two stages…a rather small indoor stage, and a rather spectacular outdoor one. Bleacher seating towards the back, row seating up front, tables everywhere else, and the blue tarps serving as shelter from winds and dirt particles kind of make you feel like you’re in a giant McDonald’s playplace.

That’s about it concerning C4. It was a nice time, nothing less. Maybe a little bit more. Stop by if you ever find yourself in the northern Scottsdale area of the 48th state. It’ll be fun, promise.
