Josh Ritter on Making A Living In Music

I was at a coffee-friend’s office the other day when I saw this on the wall:

That is a bunch of things applied to a wall via thumb-tack. The largest thing there? A poster from our Josh Ritter album release listening party/latte art bloodbath. That was a great great time. Reprise soon.

Mr. Josh Ritter is on the list of artists we’d love to see play at Everyday Joe’s (solo…his band would tear the place to the ground…or perhaps that’s the kind of raucous  . We trust you would too, so help us make it happen, in whatever (legal) way you can dream of. No abductions, please. Thanks.

If you’ve ever seen the man in concert, you understand what it means to see someone live. I tell quite a few musicians I chat with that if they want to play music for a living, they need to go see a Josh Ritter show. They need to take paper and pencil and take notes. It is a magnificent thing.

This past week, Mr. Ritter began a series on his Book Of Jubilations blog on just this very topic. At Everyday Joe’s we want to see people succeed. People being our volunteers, you, our vendors, the musicians that play here….the list could continue. The best way to get going at something is to take a peek at how others have done it. Mr. Ritter is offering his wisdom up, and we might best be advised to at least gander at it…musician or not.

Josh Ritter Advance Listening Party & Latte Art Throwdown

At Everyday Joe’s we love music and we love coffee and we love people. If we were to put that in an order of importance: people takes first place. Coffee and music are tied for second.

People are nice to be around most of the time, especially if we throw a party. And if the party can include exciting new music and a some high-stakes coffee making…then we’ve hit the jackpot.

Jackpot!

Everyday Joe’s loves the music of Josh Ritter. It is a dream of ours to see him here at 144 S. Mason one day. While that day remains to be seen, something almost as wonderful has happened. We have been chosen as one of 18 sites across the country to host an advance listening party for Mr. Ritter’s new album So Runs The World Away.

And it will be a party. Snacks. Good times. Etc. PLUS PLUS PLUS….

A latte art throwdown! Some of you may remember back in February we hosted one of these during the Mountain Regional Barista Competitions. The winner took home right around $300.

The big shindig will happen on April 27 (that’s a Tuesday). The evening starts at 7 pm and is free to attend. If you want to compete in the throwdown, there is a $5 buy-in. Otherwise, just come and listen and watch. We’re going to need folks to drink all the lattes.

Out West: Off We Go & Here WeAre

Most folks would call Colorado out west. We’re further. Anaheim, CA. Land of many things, though we are here for specific reasons. Tonight: a Veritas forum at UC Irvine. Tomorrow: the start of a 4 day coffee convention. Friday night: a free Josh Ritter concert. Lots more in between all those things, plus we’re cruising SoCal in a Dodge Caravan. The best way for 6 folks from a non-profit coffee house to get around if you ask me.

No killer pics yet, mainly just afternoon power naps after drinking killer coffee and eating killer fish tacos. But we promise to keep you updated – both here and on the Twitter.

Talk soon

love.

Random Bits: Music In A Basement In The NYC

Update 8/24/2008: Juan’s program has moved from Plum TV to Pitchfork Media’s Pitchfork.tv (exciting and good)

I recently made a discovery. A discovery that sung directly to my heart and as a result that muscle in my chest began beaming forth the light of a choir of angels…just like in Care Bears.

There is an Argentine-American. His name is Juan. He lives in Brooklyn. He has a basement. Through some sort of sweet talking or mind tricks or plain passion, he has convinced several great indie bands to perform in his basement. The performances are filmed and broadcast on Plum TV Pitchfork.tv. I imagine his days go something like this:

“Hello Juan, what are you doing today,” friend asks.

“Oh,” says Juan. “I’m going to run and get some coffee and then Josh Ritter is coming over at 11:15 to play some music in my basement. How about you?”

Friend looks a bit confused and dazed and replies:

“I see. I was gonna’ ask if you wanted to come over and see my new IKEA furniture I just finished assembling, but you sound too busy for the Swedish innovations in home decor. I’ll talk to you later.”

House concerts are making a small ressurgance in this day and age, and are something I have dreamed of doing for a long time. Everyday Joe’s can often feel like a home. Everyone who comes in here is part of the family.

Methinks Juan’s Basement and Everyday Joe’s are distant relatives of some sort. How distant? Not sure. Regardless, get through your friday by following the links to videos from Juan’s Basement below. I’ve posted my favorite for you to view.
