Candy Claws Get Stereogum’d

Some weeks Friday afternoon rolls on around and the energy in the tank is low and all you really want is a chuckle inspired by the comments on music blog Stereogum’s post about the new Sufjan Stevens album. Am I right?

Then you get to the Stereogum and see “Candy Claws Silent Time…” in the corner of the page and you click on it and a new video from our old friends is there. Pleasant surprise.

The video is below. The write up is very nice and you should read it. The comments on it aren’t quite taking off, but there are some about recent Stone Temple Pilots antics worth a smirk.

There are Candy Claws tour dates over there, too. Got word this morning from our man/sound engineer/volunteer Jon Alonzo that he has left the band and the girls of it are taking a break to go to school. BUT…this still leaves the mighty Ryan, Marty, Wesley, and Riley. Should sound ultra soothing.

And just noticed that CC is in the heavy rotation section on Stereogum. Quite the day, I guess.

50% Of Sales To Candy Claws

So…

Since we heard of The Great Pennsylvania Car Fire and it’s wrath upon the gear and other things of Candy Claws, we’ve been working behind these scenes to figure out good ways to help the Candies get back on their feet. The results are as follows:

  • This coming Friday (7.16), 50% of sales will be donated to Candy Claws. The insurance co. is not covering the loss, so we must do our part. If you can’t make it in to buy things, you can donate here.
  • Second – come August 13, we will host a benefit concert for the band featuring Candy Claws themselves, Ocean Floor, and Holly Faml’y. There will be a minimum $5 cover charge to get in. You can always give more.

Therefore, we will see you on Friday when you buy things to support the boys and girls victimized by the Great Pennsylvania Car Fire. In the meantime, enjoy the nice pre-car fire video below from Candy Claws’ show in Boston…thanks thanks to the Foundwaves blog for that. Plus, you might see an Everyday Joe’s shirt pop up on stage.

Candy Claws’ Car/Gear/Merch Burns To Ground

UPDATE 7.12.10 | 3 PM MOUNTAIN STANDARD TIME:

The Claws’ label – Two Syllable – has set up a donation page on PayPal. Get to givin’.

ORIGINAL POST:

Man oh man do I wish the title to this post was a joke.

Our friends in Candy Claws have been playing at Everyday Joe’s since their mothers had to drop them off for their sets. They have not always been Candy Claws. They have been many bands. And their voices have changed.

As Candy Claws, though, our friends have found a bit of national success. This success requires touring. This touring requires cars.

As the band drove through Pennsylvania on Saturday, black smoke began pouring out of their engine. They quickly pulled over and popped the hood. Upon seeing what they saw, they retreated down the highway on foot. This is where we now enter picture form:

Flaming Candy Claws Automobile

Thankfully, no one was hurt. The gas tank was pretty full, so the fire burned for some time. That burning fire consumed the band’s gear and CD’s. They have been loaned a van by a delightful farming family so they can get to their shows in NYC, where the record label has loaner gear waiting for them.

The band is still waiting to hear back from the folks-os at the insurance co. RE:money for gear destroyed in a car fire. From what bassist Mr. Jon Alonzo tells me, they aren’t sure what – or if – things will be replaced. With that in mind, and with generosity in your heart,  please go support the good people of Candy Claws on the rest of their summer tour. Dates are below. We plan on hosting a benefit show for them come mid-August. Deets on that soon. For now, check the dates like a good chap should and preorder the soon to be released Hidden Lands on CD or LP.

Twitteresting: Candy Claws on NPR’s Second Stage

Not trying to turn this into a Candy Claws fanblog, but you have to report the news that fits and give credit where credit is due. Plus, it’s always a nice time to see members of the EDJ family move up and up.

Our longtime pal-os in Candy Claws are turning up in quite a few places. In October they were the subject of Pitchfork’s Forkast. It now seems the once-hipster-now-career-holder listeners are ready for them, or so I would guess from a tweet by NPR’s All Songs Considered:

RT @nprobin: Today’s free download from our Second Stage: Candy Claws! http://tinyurl.com/yhx2hmf

Well, isn’t that tasty? So are the kind words from the writeup:

“After two years of writing and recording, the band self-released the stunning album early this year and were signed to the Irish label Indiecater in the fall…It’s impossible to pinpoint all of the sounds going on at one time, but digging in further yields even more surprising noises and little details that really make the music beautiful.”

You can read the rest of those kind words here, as well as listen to the featured song “Catamaran.”

Everyday Joe’s is proud of you, Candy Claws. Proud like when your child gets stitches for the first time and doesn’t shed a tear.

Audio Treat: Paper Bird

Bands with many members have become more commonplace these days. Usually these bands and their many members make tunes that could be described as dramatic or theatric.

Then there is Paper Bird. It seems to me they are concerned with two things: making nice sounding music and having a nice time. What’s more, they’ll be playing at Everyday Joe’s October 30 & 31. 6:30 pm. $10 adv/$12 door

Two night stand, baby.

Do yourself and your ears a favor and have a listen to “Lullaby” by Paper Bird. Then, do yourself another favor and buy tickets to one or both (best way to go) of the shows.

The Forkast: Candy Claws with chance of Wowzers

The hipster media has discovered a good thing of Fort Collins.

Today, our good and long-time friends in Candy Claws are part of Pitchfork’s daily Forkast. CC’s beautiful song “Catamaran” is featured and described as a “warm/sunlit” sound. The album In The Dream of Sea Life is both warm and sunlit, though not always both.

Congrats to our Candy Claws pals. Perhaps the 4k will have you take the stage in Chicago come summer of twentyten. If so, road trip. Until then, you can catch Candy Claws when they open up for Paper Bird at Everyday Joe’s on Halloween.

Free Music Friday: Glacier Prey by Candy Claws

Earlier this year, my new favorite Ft. Collins band  – Candy Claws – released their album In The Dream Of Sea Life with a show at Everyday Joe’s. Ryan, Kay, & Wesley were kind enough to give me a copy of the album (which is gorgeous visually & musically speaking) and it has quickly worked it’s way into almost daily listening rotation.

This adoration has apparently manifested itself eslwhere as Candy Claws has been recognized in local press (check it) and played shows as of late with the likes of Young Coyotes and Bad Weather California and more.

Good for you, long-time friends.

Usually, bands wait for a while after an album release to release a collection of miscellaneous other songs and things. These sort of releases are stop-gaps to keep the income flowing between albums. Candy Claws appears to be in hyper-speed, as a second album is coming and a collection of rarities, videos, and covers is now available for you to download. For free. Right now.

The collection is called Glacier Prey. It contains many things (full table of contents here). It’s quite the download (800 mb) but well worth it. Promises. Click the album art below and then go outside and play and then come back and it will be ready for you to enjoy with a snack.

Audio Treat & Visual Delight: Candy Claws

There is a group of musicians in Fort Collins that are a deeply important part of the Everyday Joe’s family. We’ve literally watched them grow up playing music. They are the Act So Big Forest.

Act So Big Forest is made up of many, many bands…most of which share members. One of those bands is Candy Claws, and they will be celebrating the release of their album Saturday night (3/21) at Everyday Joe’s.

To this point, CC hasn’t done much live performing, but they have made nature videos to accompany their songs or songs to accompany their nature videos. Few my favorite of these videos below. Then listen to their song . Then view the concert poster below that (designed by Rion of Candy Claws…have him design you something). Then come down Saturday night at 7 pm. House Of Leaves & Ocean Bump! are also on the bill. There is a $5 suggested donation.
