To me, there is not much better than when a musician’s voice is as good an instrument as the one they happen to be playing. You’d think this would come naturally, but it very often does not (names could be mentioned…but I don’t want to start any scuffles). Names that do fit the “voice is as good an instrument as any” category are Ryan O’Neal (Sleeping At Last), Matthew Perryman Jones, Nathaniel Rateliff (Born In The Flood), Karen Peris (The Innocence Mission), and Glen Hansard (The Frames). There are more, but I need to get to making my point.

Two whose voices are smooth like a nice glass of whiskey and warm my innards just the same are Aaron Espe and Gregory Alan Isakov. And looky here, they’re both playing at Everyday Joe’s on Saturday night:

I have been fairly giddy concerning this show for several months, as have you I am sure. To increase that excitement exponentially, our friends over at The Mountain Tempo have posted a new song by Mr. Isakov over on their fine, fine blog. To hear it, click on his lovely South African face below.

The Everyday Joe’s 90/10 Benefit is tomorrow. This is very exciting and is cause for whoops and hollers and loud rejoicing.

In case you haven’t been paying attention over the past month and have no idea what this so-called “benefit” has to do with “anything,” we’ve put together a nice cheat sheet for you. This way, you will have some idea of what is going on Saturday at Everyday Joe’s, why it matters, and why you’d be declared clinically loony if you missed it. Here we go:

First, read the initial announcement concerning this year’s 90/10 Benefit by clicking the poster below:

Now, read the following concerning the whole “90/10″ thing:

At Everyday Joe’s, we believe in supporting the arts and the artists making those arts. As part of this, we give a rather generous door cut when a musician charges a cover for a concert. This generous door cut is 90%. We just take 10% to help keep things trucking along.

Well, one night a year (i.e. THIS SATURDAY), we invite a group of musicians we think represents what we believe in (community, relationships, goodness, Love) to come and play the show that is to be a celebration of this place. The musicians are also kind enough to flip the door cut and split the 10% amongst themselves, while we get the remaining 90%. This money is then used to make improvements to Everyday Joe’s so we can better serve you, our community.

I hope that wasn’t too cut and dry. If it was, I am sincerely sorry. Keep reading though, because it gets much more fun and auditorally nice.

Now for the most fun things…songs and whatnot by the musicians playing Saturday night. Click a picture to be magically whisked away to lands of digital delight:

See how pleasant and great that was? Now, imagine if you were seeing all those folks play on the same night at Everyday Joe’s. Your head may very well explode. Well, lucky for you, they’re all playing this Saturday…and I can promise minimal head explosion but nothing concerning the expected elation of your heart.

The 2008 Everyday Joe’s 90/10 Benefit is just a few days away! The annual show to benefit Everyday Joe’s will feature Dan Craig, The Riflemen, Aaron Espe, and LIfeboat Etiquette. Over the past few weeks, we’ve introduced you to these fine musicians one by one. It has been so very great and we have one more to go. This week: Dan Craig.

The operation of a non-profit coffee house and concert venue is a grand journey. Along the journey, it isn’t uncommon to stumble upon wonderful treausers, ungaurded by any sort of fantastical creature. These treasures may include nice people, amusing trinkets, delicious things. In May, the treasure was Dan Craig. I’d even say he’s a diamond. Not just musically, but as a kind fellow and as a scholar of facial hair.

Look at this moustache:

Now, look at what the moustache has become:

Sweet Charlton Heston that is gorgeous. I’m not sure if the growth of Mr. Craig’s facial follicles is some sort of gauge for the current level of his musical prowess, but if it is, my guess is none of us will ever listen to any other sound after Saturday night…because it would simply sound horrid in comparison to this bearded wonder.

Perhaps you need a bit more persuasion? Have a listen:

First, an Audio Treat that Dan has offered up to us before.

“Further To Fall”

Now, go ahead and try “No Rain Tonight” on for size. It’s a pleasant diddy.

Well then. I think over the past 4 weeks we’ve educated you quite well in the ways of fine music. The only way to top these times is by showing your lovely face at the 2008 Everyday Joe’s 90/10 Benefit, taking place this Saturday (Dec. 6) at Everyday Joe’s (144 S. Mason, Ft. Collins) at 6:30 pm. Tickets are still available and are $10 in advance or $12 at the door. You can get them at the shop or online at www.everydayjoes.org.

We do look forward to seeing you. I’ll save you a seat.

Further:

The 2008 Everyday Joe’s 90/10 Benefit is just a little bit away! The annual show to benefit Everyday Joe’s will feature Dan Craig, The Riflemen, Aaron Espe, and LIfeboat Etiquette. In order to be properly prepared to enjoy the evening, we’ll spend the next few weeks introducing the artists to you. This week: The Riflemen

Rifles. They go bang. Sometimes they may just have a flag that pops out the end of them that states the action of “bang.”

Men who fire rifles. They can be referred to as Riflemen. Except in this case. I’m not sure any of the fellows you’re about to encounter have ever fired a rifle. A couple of them have respectable facial hair that might make them a respectable addition to any regiment, but that’s it. They do fire musical instruments at your hearing capabilities. What’s more, they look good doing it and it sounds nice.

Here’s a picture for proof of good looks:

See? What did I tell you. And that’s not even the whole band. Add Tyler Kellogg on drums (he’s wearing a shirt and tie most waking moments) and Jonathan Alonzo on bass (he’s wearing at LEAST a t-shirt at most waking moments), and you have the next cover of Tiger Beat.

Now here are some songs to cement my claims of nice sounding audio rounds fired at you:

“Notes Upon A Page” (live on KRFC)

“Cowboy” (live on KRFC)

Upon finishing that last song, I’m sure you’re in the mood to: a) hit the floor or b) watch some clips from the old television series The Rifleman. Well, I’ve got you covered. And the video below is even better if you listen to “Cowboy” while watching him do his business.

Just one more week to go! Next week I’ll introduce Dan Craig to those of you who haven’t had the pleasure of making his aquaintance. He believes in moustaches, beards, mandolins, and overall good feelings.

The 2008 Everyday Joe’s 90/10 Benefit is coming soon! The annual show to benefit Everyday Joe’s will feature Dan Craig, The Riflemen, Aaron Espe, and LIfeboat Etiquette. In order to be properly prepared to enjoy the evening, we’ll spend the next few weeks introducing the artists to you. This week: Mr. Aaron Espe

Aaron Espe is a quiet man. He recently moved to Fort Collins from Denver. That means he went from being one of the best songwriters in Denver to one of the best songwriters in Fort Collins. He is a quiet man that makes enjoyable music. Quiet musicians are more often than not some of the best, as they leave what they have to say for songs. Support for this statement may be found by referencing The Wheel, Matthew Perryman Jones, and Pigeon John.

A scientist would now add Aaron Espe to this list under the category labeled “proof.”

I have just been handed the audio & visual evidence for this proof by our resident scientist. Here you go:

Listen to “Small Town”

Watch “Melody” recorded live at Everyday Joe’s

In order to be properly prepared to enjoy the evening, we’ll spend the next few weeks introducing the artists to you. This week: Ryan Hollen…aka Lifeboat Etiquette.

The lifeboat. It saves some people. The Titanic didn’t have enough of them. This one has a substantial and respectable beard.

Exhibit A:

And Exhibit B:

What does the beard matter, though? Shouldn’t this be about this man’s tunes? Not his fantastic facial hair? Indeed. But you see, bearded troubadours have a penchant for making music that is listenable exponentially… i.e. Iron & Wine, Fleet Foxes, Bon Iver, and ZZ Top.

Fortunately for the world, Lifeboat Etiquette and his beard are no exception. The Fort Collins native is quite good, and thanks to the good people at the Internet, we have audio and video as evidence.

Please watch Red Threads:

[

www.youtube.com/watch?v=VRX3unq5Hmg

Then, listen to Eye For Composition (or listen first then watch…whatever you’re into).

Now, go buy your tickets to the Everyday Joe’s 90/10 Benefit Concert on December 6. They are $10 in advance and $12 at the door.
Next week we’ll meet Aaron Espe. He’s a nice fellow.

love.

An exciting and important time in the yearly cycle of Everyday Joe’s has come upon us – The Everyday Joe’s 90/10 Benefit. It’s actually a little later in the cycle this year than in the past…but I do believe that is a good thing.

Cycles…they indicate change. Transition. Life and death. It is happening with the beetles and the pine trees. Things have to reset so new things can begin.

Each year, the 90/10 Benefit is meant to be a musical picture of what Everyday Joe’s stands for. That is, community and relationships and the fostering and nurturing of those things. The last three years (this will mark benefit numero four), this picture has been accomplished by drawing upon a community of musicians that helped to establish the musical foundation of Everyday Joe’s. Many of them were from Boulder & Louisville: Trace Bundy, Katie Herzig, The Blackthorn Project, and Aaron Strumpel to name a few.

Some from other places: Listener, Luke Flowers, Paul Pavlik.

And good friends from Fort Collins: Josh Dillard, Winderous Igloos, DJ Shaggz, The Igloos.

These folks, along with the hundreds of others that have played the stage at 144 S. Mason on a Friday or Saturday night, have resulted in the growing of quite a musical family tree. What’s more fantastic is that the tree continues to grow and sprout new branches. The beetles have not gotten to this tree yet.

2008 at Everyday Joe’s has been marked by transition. Many of the musicians who began their careers playing here a few times a year have now found regional & national & international success. Having them play here once or twice a year is now a treat. This has also made room for more musicians to make their way into the building and climb onto the tree and carve out their place as part of the family. Now that they’re here, it seems like they always have been.

At this point, it is proper and appropriate to present you with the pertinent information concerning the 2008 Everyday Joe’s 90/10 Benefit. Artistic representation is the most pleasant way to do this. Observe:

See, a tree. All that talk of trees and cycles did not go unwarranted.

Tickets are on sale now at Everyday Joe’s and online soon via www.everydayjoes.org. In the coming month, we will introduce the musicians to you one by one so you can have opportunity to grasp their goodness before they blow your mind.

We will see you all soon. Thank you for being part of the Everyday Joe’s family. You each have a branch on the tree.

love.

For quite a bit now, I’ve been drawn to music with bleeps and ambient wahs and not quite discernable words. Music probably categorized as weird by my parents and not cool enough by the hip kids.

However, as of late, music makers using guitars and lovely melodies and very discernable words have been patiently making a welcome reentry into my musical universe. As of right….wait for it…now, you can add Aaron Espe to that list.

Even more exciting than this expansion of my universe is the fact that Mr. Espe will be playing at Everyday Joe’s this coming Saturday night (September 20). In order for your universe to also expand, Aaron has been kind enough to give us two songs to listen to. He couldn’t decide between them, so I decided on both.

The show starts at 7 pm and is $5. The quite talented Jonathan Kingham will be starting the night off right. He’ll be on stage as a result of another blog post.

Please enjoy “Small Town” and “Tuesday Morning.” I look forward to seeing your lovely eyes Saturday night.

Oh, wait. Here’s another special surprise that just came down the pipes. A treat from Jonathan Kingham. Please enjoy “Grace.”
