Surprise Christmas! Album From Aaron Strumpel

Back last month, your friend & mine Aaron Strumpel released an EP of Christmas tunes cleverly titled Christmas! (the clever part is the exclamation point). It was free. You might have enjoyed it.

Yesterday, the man surprised all or most of us with the release of a full length album…also cleverly titled Christmas! (again, the exclamation point). The difference? More songs, several surprise treats with the download, the voice of the wonderful Karla Adolphe all over the album (most noticeably on “Silent Night”), and it costs $8. That should read it costs ONLY $8.

And then there’s the whole other project that Aaron is releasing next month at Everyday Joe’s with Karla Adolphe…but we’ll get to that later. You don’t get it with the $8, though you might be helping to fund it.

Listen to Christmas! below, and then pony up the billz so you can make the people you love listen to it non-stop for the next 5 days. These tunes will make your heart grow sizes today.

Love, Everyday Joe’s | Vol. 4: We Have A Strong City

Oh my oh my are we glad to give this to you.

It almost didn’t happen, you know. We weren’t sure if a Volume 4 should exist. Then, our minds/hearts were changed. We’re beyond pleased to give you Love, Everyday Joe’s | Vol. 4: We Have A Strong City.

In the past, this has been used as a fundraiser to help pay our music licensing fees. This year, donations will be directed back to the musicians who donated songs…all 14 of them. They are: Candy Claws, Aaron Espe, Jessica Sonner, Ask You In Gray, Aaron Strumpel, The Sunshine House, Lifeboat Etiquette, Luke Flowers, The Blackthorn Project, Danielle Ate The Sandwich, Paper Bird, Dan Craig, You Me & Apollo, and Baily Stauffer & The Katy Janes.

It’s a large handful of the musicians who have helped shape this place. Please support them, read a little bit more about this year’s compilation, and download the tunes. You can do all that by clicking on the cover art below. Have a good listen!

Aaron Strumpel’s Free Christmas EP

Strumpel sounds like something you’d eat at Christmas dinner. A strumpel loaf. Strumpelcake. Yum.

Aaron Strumpel is not something you eat at Christmas dinner, but a man who makes fine, fine music. This time around, it’s renditions of your three favorite Christmas tunes. How’d Aaron know they were your favorite? We told him. How’d we know? We have ways we’ll tell you about when you’re older.

Listen to the EP below and download if you please (via Bandcamp). You may be thinking it’s too early for these tunes…but hey, the department stores start with the Christmas merch in June.

No Words November v. 2.0/Derek Webb’s “Feedback”

We’re a week into our second No Words November. We’ve deleted music with words from the Everyday Joe’s music computer. We’ve added more without words. The first No Words November was great. This one is shaping up to be. It’s a month of maybe keeping the jumble out of your head and listening to what you might hear. And from there…well who knows.

Really, it’s a month to encourage and get in the practice of the act of listening. When we listen, we might be led places or we might lead places. Or to things or from things.

And here is what’s interesting:

On November 1st, Derek Webb (we think his music is nice) released Feedback. It is an entirely instrumental/electronic album with each track based on a section of the Lord’s prayer. An interesting concept regardless of what you believe, as it is an interpretation. From Webb’s official site:

Worship is a complicated idea.  Arguably, it’s what we all do, 24 hours a day (regardless of what we’re worshipping).  And I’m aware of a lot of “worship product” in the marketplace I sometimes occupy.  So I was cautious when I first started receiving the coordinates that would lead me to make ‘Feedback’.  It was immediately conceptual and ambitious, so much so that I genuinely wasn’t sure I could do it.  But this seemed to be the perfect posture in which to create something worthy of being called a “worshipful” piece of art.  So I studied, meditated, struggled and prayed my way through this creative process, and it’s easily the most challenging thing I’ve done in my career. But I believe it’s been worth it, even just for the ways it’s stretched both my creative process and my faith as a follower of the Way.

Interesting…this talk of receiving coordinates.

It looks like a film based on the album based on the Lord’s prayer is also coming down the pipes. There are also companion paintings. You can see the preview for the film below, and the paintings at the album purchase page. We’ll be playing the album in the shop this month…if you want to hear it just let us know.

Audio Treat: Tim Coons

For some time now Everyday Joe’s has been friends with the people at Enter The Worship Circle. We have also been friends with Tim Coons for some time. Two of our some time friends are now making music together.

Tim is the latest artist to record for EWC’s Chair & Microphone series. Following the model set by Ben Pasley, Aaron Strumpel, and Karla Adolphe – the album was recorded in one sitting with a microphone and a guitar. The results are…well…very Tim Coons. And we like that.

Tim will be celebrating the release of Chair & Microphone Vol. 4 this coming Friday (9.17) at Everyday Joe’s. Mr. Coons was kind enough to send over a couple tracks for you to stream/download. They are below. Show is at 7 pm. Cover is $5. Brian Creenica and Chris Telfer will warm the night up.

Katie Herzig: Live At The Fillmore SF

Our good lady Katie Herzig keeps moving on the up & up.

While Ms. Herzig & the band was on tour with Brandi Carlile back in fall of ott-nine, the good people of The Fillmore in San Francisco saw it proper to record her set (this same tour stopped by Everyday Joe’s). That recording is now available on iTunes in the so hip HD video or as just audio.

We’re glad the SanFran folks saw it proper, as we also see it proper.

Peep the preview below, then head to iTunes for your purchasing needs.

Candy Claws Get Stereogum’d

Some weeks Friday afternoon rolls on around and the energy in the tank is low and all you really want is a chuckle inspired by the comments on music blog Stereogum’s post about the new Sufjan Stevens album. Am I right?

Then you get to the Stereogum and see “Candy Claws Silent Time…” in the corner of the page and you click on it and a new video from our old friends is there. Pleasant surprise.

The video is below. The write up is very nice and you should read it. The comments on it aren’t quite taking off, but there are some about recent Stone Temple Pilots antics worth a smirk.

There are Candy Claws tour dates over there, too. Got word this morning from our man/sound engineer/volunteer Jon Alonzo that he has left the band and the girls of it are taking a break to go to school. BUT…this still leaves the mighty Ryan, Marty, Wesley, and Riley. Should sound ultra soothing.

And just noticed that CC is in the heavy rotation section on Stereogum. Quite the day, I guess.

Agents Of Future: Passion Before Precision

The Agents of Future are some of my favorite people/one of our favorite bands on the face of the planet in its entirety. They were part of the 2009 90/10 Benefit. My guess is – regardless of what believe – you want some part of what they carry around with them.

New Nathaniel Rateliff song: “Pounds And Pounds”

We love the people of Nathaniel Rateliff (formerly Nathaniel Rateliff & The Wheel (formerly The Wheel)). They are good people. They make some fantastic music that is def some of our summer jaaaammmmmzzzzz. Good for nights on the porch, taking a nudge time to time…or mornings on the porch listening to the birds and crickets sing together.

I digitized over to the Nathaniel Rateliff site just now, only to be pleasantly surprised by video of an on-air in NYC performance of their new song “Pounds And Pounds.” ‘Tis a beaut, as per the norm.

Nathaniel is back in his deep-v white v-neck and Joseph Pope wears a Delta Spirit shirt. Almost as killer as the tune.

The Rateliff camp is on tour now, and will make a stop in Fort Collins during Bohemian Nights on August 21. See you there. “Pounds & Pounds” below.

Candy Claws’ Car/Gear/Merch Burns To Ground

UPDATE 7.12.10 | 3 PM MOUNTAIN STANDARD TIME:

The Claws’ label – Two Syllable – has set up a donation page on PayPal. Get to givin’.

ORIGINAL POST:

Man oh man do I wish the title to this post was a joke.

Our friends in Candy Claws have been playing at Everyday Joe’s since their mothers had to drop them off for their sets. They have not always been Candy Claws. They have been many bands. And their voices have changed.

As Candy Claws, though, our friends have found a bit of national success. This success requires touring. This touring requires cars.

As the band drove through Pennsylvania on Saturday, black smoke began pouring out of their engine. They quickly pulled over and popped the hood. Upon seeing what they saw, they retreated down the highway on foot. This is where we now enter picture form:

Flaming Candy Claws Automobile

Thankfully, no one was hurt. The gas tank was pretty full, so the fire burned for some time. That burning fire consumed the band’s gear and CD’s. They have been loaned a van by a delightful farming family so they can get to their shows in NYC, where the record label has loaner gear waiting for them.

The band is still waiting to hear back from the folks-os at the insurance co. RE:money for gear destroyed in a car fire. From what bassist Mr. Jon Alonzo tells me, they aren’t sure what – or if – things will be replaced. With that in mind, and with generosity in your heart,  please go support the good people of Candy Claws on the rest of their summer tour. Dates are below. We plan on hosting a benefit show for them come mid-August. Deets on that soon. For now, check the dates like a good chap should and preorder the soon to be released Hidden Lands on CD or LP.
