Free Music Friday: Night Beds (EP & Bonus Track)

Every Fire; Every Joy

I have been looking for this for months.

Not Night Beds in particular, but the new music that might move me to listening on repeat. Here it is and it is free.

Our friend Zach Tipton (Young Coyotes, I Am The Dot) told the good people of Night Beds that we of Everyday Joe’s would enjoy their tunes. Night Beds then sent us a little note with links to their free EP Every Fire; Every Joy and to a bonus track featuring Mr. Tipton, “Good Person.”

I keep listening and it all just keeps getting better. In the Everyday Joe’s universe, Night Beds might done be this year’s You, Me, and Apollo. A show with those two on the bill would be oh so vibey.

You can listen to “Good Person” and the entirety of Every Fire; Every Joy below. Once you are convicted by their summer-nights-on-the-back-porch-good-times feel, get your digital paws on the former here and the latter here.

A Taste of Aaron Strumpel’s “Birds” (Free Download)

Our longtime friend Aaron Strumpel is headlining our annual 90/10 Benefit this coming Saturday. Were you aware of that or have you not been listening to the good things your uncle has been trying to teach you? If you are not aware and want to be, read about the benefit here and then listen to Aaron’s critically-acclaimed Elephants, which he will be performing it’s entirety as part of his set.

The companion album to ElephantsBirds – is getting the finishing touches put on it in Aaron’s mountain laboratory. Out of those finishing touches has come and alternate version of a new song titled “Grandma.” Aaron’s words shall take it from here:

Friends!

Well, just a note. I’m hard at work at the new album, almost. Since you’re in the inside loop, thought i’d jot downn a bit more about this song then what i’ve written elsewhere…

I wrote it a few years back after visiting my grandmother. She always loved to give me gifts when I came, and this time she had a chocolate bar or some snack for me…she lives in a nursing home! Anyway, she said she wished she could give me more and was really actually sad about it. I told her I didn’t want anything more than to see her smile and be with her. It’s a crazy thing this life is…we’re born and everything is brand new for 25 years or so, then things get normal and I feel like a lot of us experience a dead zone of plateau if we’re not careful…then we get older and can’t quite do the things we do…but all through it, love from and to family can just immerse and give meaning and beauty to our times and seasons. Anyway, i wrote the song as an inner conversation with myself about being ok with the passing of time and life here.

I’ve never shared it with grandma and now she’s getting a bit older…gonna turn 98 in a couple of weeks! She doesn’t remember me when I visit, but loves it that I come and seems to know what it means when I tell her I’m her grandson. She wears a rosary i gave her a few years ago everyday and I tell her I gave it to here every time I see her. This last time, my dad visited her the night before, saying she was going to have a special visitor the next day and asked her if she knew who it was gonna be…she answered in her 98 yr old voice, ‘is it our dear Lord?’ :) She was excited to see me and my folks and said, ‘Will you come everyday, can it always be like this?’ and gave me a bag of chips to have on my drive home. She’s so lovely and I hope I get to see her again.

I hope you enjoy this song. It’s a different version from what will be released.

love,
aaron

Oh that Aaron Strumpel. When he opens his heart it can move one two sizes two small. He is a good man.

Listen to “Grandma (Crazy Version)” below and download the track here to hold with you until the Birds can fly home to you and nest next to the Elephant tracks on your heart.

Download Katie Herzig’s New “Live” Studio Album

This is pleasant and savvy.

If you follow our friend Katie Herzig on Twitter (@katieherzig), then you may have read the rumblings of a “live” studio album she was recording with her most-of-the-time tour mates Claire & Jordan. I enjoy “live” studio albums. I also “like” using quotation marks. Guns N Roses recorded “Paradise City” in one take. At least I think it was “Paradise City.” Either way…rock and roll.

This Acoustic Trio album that Herzig has recorded may not rock or roll, but it is free until November 1. You can download the album below. Katie, Claire, & Jordan (plus the rest of Katie’s band) will return to Everyday Joe’s on October 12. Tickets are $12 in advance or $15 at the door and are on sale now at Everyday Joe’s or by clicking here. Gregory Alan Isakov will be opening the show up, so be hip or square but just make sure you’re there.

I wrote that in one take.

Free Music Friday: Glacier Prey by Candy Claws

Earlier this year, my new favorite Ft. Collins band  – Candy Claws – released their album In The Dream Of Sea Life with a show at Everyday Joe’s. Ryan, Kay, & Wesley were kind enough to give me a copy of the album (which is gorgeous visually & musically speaking) and it has quickly worked it’s way into almost daily listening rotation.

This adoration has apparently manifested itself eslwhere as Candy Claws has been recognized in local press (check it) and played shows as of late with the likes of Young Coyotes and Bad Weather California and more.

Good for you, long-time friends.

Usually, bands wait for a while after an album release to release a collection of miscellaneous other songs and things. These sort of releases are stop-gaps to keep the income flowing between albums. Candy Claws appears to be in hyper-speed, as a second album is coming and a collection of rarities, videos, and covers is now available for you to download. For free. Right now.

The collection is called Glacier Prey. It contains many things (full table of contents here). It’s quite the download (800 mb) but well worth it. Promises. Click the album art below and then go outside and play and then come back and it will be ready for you to enjoy with a snack.

Free Download of Sleeping At Last’s “Keep No Score”

Over on the NPR All Songs Considered blog, they recently asked readers to submit the name of the band they consider “theirs.” The band that you tell people about as soon as you get the chance, regardless of if they’ve heard of them or not.

For me, that band is Sleeping At Last. I would say I gush over them. I gush over them. The reasons are two fold:

  1. I never seem to tire of their music. It has been in constant rotation in my headphones since 2006.
  2. They are some of the nicest fellows I have ever come across ever and their mother is a diamond.

The band is currently putting the finishing touches on a new album (excitement overwhelms me here), and as a way to celebrate they are offering their 2006 effort, Keep No Score, as a free download for the month of June. This one of MAYBE two or three albums that has changed the way I think about things/has brought me to tears. The download is available over on NoiseTrade, which you can get to by clicking here.

Download this album, people. Then we can converse about it and I will buy you a drink. On the real. Let me know when you are available.

Young Coyotes Grace Daytrotter & Offer Free Downloads

You might remember back in January when Everyday Joe’s hosted a benefit for Deliver Darfur – an organization started by two of our volunteers to raise money to battle & awareness of the humanitarian crisis in Sudan. The benefit was an overwhelming success and boasted on of the finest musical lineups these ears have heard in some time.

One of the acts that night, Young Coyotes, are beginning to make waves on a national level.  They’re currently in Austin, TX making the rounds at the ’09 installment of the SXSW festy and will surely conquer the town by the time their stay there is over. Also, Daytrotter (a fine indie music blog) posted Young Coyotes’ session today and it is chalk full of free downloads. To add good listening (though not easy) to your music library, click the Young Coyotes Coat Of Arms/Beards Advocay Shield below.

Free Music Friday: “Throw” by Son Lux

Sometimes good things just keep on giving.

About a year ago, I gave you my first impressions of At War With Walls And Mazes, the debut album by Son Lux. That album is my official favorite of 2008, and Son Lux (Ryan Lott) just keeps on finding songs that didn’t make AWWWAM’s final cut…and they seem to be getting exponentially more beautiful.

In order to support these claims, I present to you “Throw.” A song that didn’t make the album that Son Lux released last week as a free download followed by the words “Enjoy, and please spread it around!”

We will now do our part in that spreading. Download “Throw” here.

Or, if your not into positively free and legit music, just listen to it below.

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Happy Friday.
