2009 US Barista Championship: Intelligentsia Goes For The Repeat

You might remember last year when Intelligentsia’s Kyle Glanville won the US Barista Championship. It was exciting news, mainly because we brew the beans roasted by Intelligentsia and we stand behind everything they are doing to straighten out the coffee industry.

This weekend, the 2009 USBC will take place in Portland, OR…and Intelligentsia will again be well represented. By my count, our favorite roaster will be sending 5 baristas to the competition — including reigning Western Regional Champion Nick Griffith. Mr. Griffith happens to be our sales rep, so we are rooting for him loudly from Fort Collins. Maybe not loudly out loud, but definitely loudly in our hearts. Here is a picture of him holding a trophy and smiling largely:

The fellows to his left & right are Devin Pedde and Ryan Wilbur – also Intelli baristas and concluded the top 3 sweep at the WRBC. They are pleased to meet you. All three will compete at the USBC.

You can watch live coverage of this weekend’s fierce dueling beginning at 9:15 am Portland time on March 5 by clicking here.

Aaron Strumpel Wins Bandspotting…and we all rejoice.

I’m not quite sure where to start here, as we at Everyday Joe’s are beaming with joy over news just received.

I’ve long recognized our dear friend and brother Aaron Strumpel as one of the hardest working musicians to ever enter the profession. I can remember almost 3 years ago when he was releasing his first album and he worked so hard to promote his release shows and his music…all on his own. No agents. No managers. No paid promoters. Just Aaaron Strumpel and his arsenal of gumption. Well, now we can officially say that hard work pays off.

Mr. Strumpel has been selected as the winner of the 2009 Calvin College BandSpotting competition, part of the Festival of Faith & Music. Not sure what most of the things in that last sentence are? Here are rundowns:

The Festival of Faith & Music at Calvin College is a biennial conference that brings together musicians, critics, journalists, musicians, artists, and listeners for three days of discussing and celebrating insightful music that explores, in some significant way, issues of faith. Please read our mission statement for more information.

Don’t worry, got you covered there:

Mission Statement

The Festival of Faith and Music is the gathering of a community of pilgrims who are on a journey to hear, promote and create the music of epiphany—music that catches our breath with its discovery of delight in the ordinary, eternity in the exceptional. We seek to revel in the mystery of the art form, comprehending it better through shared stories and experiences, allowing it to surround and teach us. We seek to discern the ways grace, love, compassion and the Christian faith are expressed in the world of popular music. We seek to be conscientious listeners, agents of renewal and prophets of the Light.

Now about the whole Bandspotting dealy:

In an effort to support newer bands and musicians, the Festival of Faith & Music is sponsoring bandspotting, a new music spotlight. Bandspotting is an opportunity for selected artists to receive feedback from respected critics, gain exposure to festival participants, and even perform at the festival itself.

The winner of the 2007 competition was Ryan Lott aka Son Lux who I would say I am absolutely ga-ga over. He had the opportunity to play a show at that year’s festy with the mighty Sufjan Stevens. This year, Strumps will have the opportunity to rub elbows with and blow the musical minds of David Bazan, Over The Rhine, Lupe Fiasco, The Hold Steady, and Vic Chesnutt to name a few.

In closing, here is a good looking picture of our newest hero:

If that isn’t a closing argument, I’m not sure what is. Way to be Aaron. We love you.

Live From Chicago: Two Things We Stopped Walking To Look At

Ahoy hoy from some coldness…but a coldness that I think I love.

We’ve walked around a lot in this coldness. We have found magnificent pizza (thank you folks at Due). We have ingested some magnificent tea (and made a new friend…Jake we love you and your pastries). We have also seen some gorgeous art on buildings that has stopped us in our tracks.

Take a looky-loo:

The Man

That is a large man.

Give this a how-do-you-do:

Beautiful Masonry

That is a large building. It’s all brick and stained glass and now houses a Bloomingdales…it used to be a shriners temple. We sat on a bench and stared at it while we waited for our pizza to be ready. The aftertaste of that building in our minds probably made the pizza taste better.

Sorry nothing has been posted here specifically pertaining to coffee fest. Probably some of that soon.

love & miss you.

Live From Chicago: Chill Time

Well, we’re here. Chicago. Bitter winds and a lovely high of twenty. I come to you from Intelligentsia Coffee on Randolph Street. So very delicious.

The Second City will be our environment for the next 3.5 days as we attend Coffee Fest. As amusing things come along, we’ll make sure to keep you updated here on Appendix E-J.  Lucky for you, the trip out here held an amusing treat for us.

Ben’s Ginger Ale From The Other Side Of The World

The only time Ben drinks Ginger Ale is aboard aeroplanes. This trip is no exception. Here is Ben & the can he received:

Apparently, Canada Dry is also available in the Asian market…and with a much better slogan – “Chill Time.”

If this  pleasant surprises is any indication of how the rest of this trip will go, I think my head just might explode with delight. How fanciful.

Adventures in…coffee? News: VIA Ready Brew by Starbucks

So, this is some interesting news.

I have no qualms with Starbucks. The truth is they introduced specialty coffee to the masses, and shops like Everyday Joe’s need to give credit where credit is due and acknowledge the fact that…at least on some level…we wouldn’t be around without SBux. As our friend Darren would say, we shouldn’t lead with what we’re against. The first Starbucks I drank at is at the corner of Tejon & Bijou in Colorado Springs. I was 13. I had an iced mocha while skipping out on church.

As of late, I have heard rumblings on other blogs of an instant coffee coming down the Starbucks pipeline. Those rumblings gave me two thoughts:

1) For reals?

2) I hope for reals, because that equals content for the blog.

Today, it is being reported as for reals:

“Starbucks Corp, whose chief executive is trying to fight ‘misperceptions about affordability’ for the coffee chain’s brands, unveiled on Tuesday its new Via Ready Brew instant coffee that sells for less than $1 per cup.”

“The company, which recently announced another round of store closures and job cuts, will begin selling Via next month in select markets in the United States and in London. A trio of single-serve Via packets will sell for $2.95 in the U.S. and 12 packets will be priced at $9.95.”

Hopefully, Colorado is one of those select markets. If it is, I will get my hands on some of those delicious(?) flavor crystals and we’ll try them for you, right here on the Appendix.

The Goodness: Love Is Concrete

Todd Fadel is a good fellow. He makes music with Agents of Future (loud, beautiful) and is friends with friends (Aaron Strumpel, The Blackthorn Project, Kate Hurley etc.).

A little while back, I received an e-mail from Mr. Fadel concerning a thing he was building called Love Is Concrete. When he first explained it to me, I thought it sounded magnificent. Now that it is around, I know it is magnificent. I speaks so clearly of truly Good things and things I hope Everyday Joe’s can accomplish that it about makes me overly-emotional. I’d try to explain it, but I think the following video does a better job. Watch it, and then follow the links to the web site.

Audio Treat: Young Coyotes

Yes, they are actually coyotes. At least that’s what they will tell you. I’ll tell you they make nice-sounding bits of music…not muzak. That’s a fact. Jack.

Enough of the rhyming. If they really are coyotes, they are human-looking enough to be named Adam & Zach. Young Coyotes are a musical duo on the rise, that’s for shiz. If I had a vote, they’d be taking off for stardom any day now…or at least enough success to sustain a carreer in the field of music and have a few Totino’s in the freezer as well.

If you’d like to catch Young Coyotes before this stardom, Saturday 1/31 will be your chance at Everyday Joe’s. They’re playing a benefit for local organization Deliver Darfur (which happens to have two Everyday Joe’s volunteers at the helm). Others taking the stage that evening:

Dan Craig, Bad Weather California, The Wheel.

Holy Moly.

Before you run out of the house and start camping on the sidewalk in front Everyday Joe’s, please have a listen to the following Young Coyotes composition. Enjoy “When I Was In The Fire.” See you Saturday. 7 pm. $10 suggested donation.
