Our good friend Herb Brodsky (co-founder of Novo Coffee) has a story. Part of it involves three years serving on the board of the Union Cab Cooperative in Madison, WI. If we remember right, he helped start the co-op, but we might be remembering wrong. It also inolves always greeting you with his trademark “Woo!”, a spin, and a hug.

While in Wisconsin he made friends with Mr. Michael Feldman. These days, Herb works in coffee and Michael works in National Public Radio as the host of Whad’Ya Know?. Last week, Herb was back in the Great North visiting old friends and stopped by the Whad’Ya Know studio. The following transpired:

Then you get to the Stereogum and see “Candy Claws Silent Time…” in the corner of the page and you click on it and a new video from our old friends is there. Pleasant surprise.

The video is below. The write up is very nice and you should read it. The comments on it aren’t quite taking off, but there are some about recent Stone Temple Pilots antics worth a smirk.

There are Candy Claws tour dates over there, too. Got word this morning from our man/sound engineer/volunteer Jon Alonzo that he has left the band and the girls of it are taking a break to go to school. BUT…this still leaves the mighty Ryan, Marty, Wesley, and Riley. Should sound ultra soothing.

And just noticed that CC is in the heavy rotation section on Stereogum. Quite the day, I guess.

We love 10 oz. diner mugs. Love them. Thou wilst too.

The Everyday Joe’s diner mug is an official thing now. It is a cream color. The Everyday Joe’s lightning bolts on one side, “Support Your Local Non-Profit Coffee House” lightning bolts on the other – both in brown.

The lightning bolt logo was first designed based off an old NPR logo we saw. What we didn’t know is that we were unwittingly recreating the Operation Electric logo – the electrical appliance company that occupied the space at 144 S. Mason for decades before we did. The former-owners of that company are our generous landlords. When they saw the logo on our travel mug, they burst with joy. Therefore…we have decided to stick with it.

(speaking of those travel mugs…there are only 4 left! Then they will be gone forever)

These little puppies will cost around the $8 mark, and will come with a complimentary brew from our single-cup drip bar or a loose leaf tea. They should be available Friday morning.

It is most days that we try concocting new drinks. Sometimes they are delish (our Holiday Spice Latte is one to remember) and other times we spit them out (i.e. when Chris tried espresso in a grapefruit Izze). Sometimes…just sometimes…a bit of beverage magic drops into our laps.

Our man in the milk biz Steve Shafer brought a surprise by a month ago. Mr. Shafer is a longtime volunteer and currently employed by Morning Fresh Dairy (our fav). Morning Fresh’s milk needs no help in a latte. It is delicious and sweet and plays nice with the Espresso Novo it is paired with. The milk, though, has invited a friend to the party.

Have you ever tried Coopersmith’s root beer? If not, you ought should. If so, you know what I’m talkin’ ’bout. Now – imagine some of the syrup Coopersmith’s crafts for their root beer combined with Morning Fresh milk. What do you have? Rootbeer Milk. You can stop imagining. It is a reality.

When Steve brought a quart of the stuff (fresh from R&D) over to my house, we tried it plain. We tried it with adult beverage additives. My son tried it from his sippy cup. In all these forms it was lovely. There was one question left floating around in the air, though: would it work with espresso?

The answer: Holy bananapants. The Rootbeer Milk Iced Latte is a late summer treat. It will take you towards the fall classic. We will have it here at Everyday Joe’s until further notice.

I digitized over to the Nathaniel Rateliff site just now, only to be pleasantly surprised by video of an on-air in NYC performance of their new song “Pounds And Pounds.” ‘Tis a beaut, as per the norm.

Nathaniel is back in his deep-v white v-neck and Joseph Pope wears a Delta Spirit shirt. Almost as killer as the tune.

The Rateliff camp is on tour now, and will make a stop in Fort Collins during Bohemian Nights on August 21. See you there. “Pounds & Pounds” below.

It is so good to be back. Despite the break-in on Sunday morning at 4 a.m. , we are all in good spirits. Nothing was taken or damaged or even touched. A man had a good night on the town. Walking home, the pew in our foyer looked comfortable. To get to that pew, a glass door needed to be smashed. The door was smashed, the pew was slept on, a witness called the authorities, a man was escorted out of the building, and now we have wood on our door while we we wait for some glass.

That wake-up call from the police was a weird twist to an otherwise productive weekend cleaning up things made beautiful. Thanks to everyone who helped in all areas: prep, feeding the crew, clean-up, and financial. Remember that time we had carpet?

UPDATE 7.24.10 | 8:02 A.M. : ‘TIS COMPLETE-ISH

The MVPs worked until midnight on Thursday as well. They arrived again at 6 am on Friday morning and worked until the completion of what they started arrived…right around 3:30 pm.

The floors are the hotness. Everyday Joe’s…so hot right now.

We’re working hard to clean the place up, replace some baseboard, and generally get things back in order. Pictures as the day progresses. Below: one from yesterday nighttime to get your anticipatory senses ready for Monday morning.

We hired the MVPs of concrete design, apparently. It’s like the Miami Heat.

The crew got their machine up and running yesterday morning. Then they worked until midnight last night. Then they returned at 6 a.m. this morning. Much sleep? Negatory. Ankle-breaking ridge that bisected the coffee house? Gone-zo. Plus, they plan on finishing the heavy work today, leaving just a bit of clean-up to do tomorrow. If you ask me, they never need to pay for coffee at Everyday Joe’s again.

We miss you.

It’s been two days now. We don’t miss the carpet, though. It was a joy to rip it to shreds. It was hard work getting the concrete underneath ready for the crew that came in on Monday, but it was worth it. Then the crew’s main grinder’s engine broke. A new part will be in tomorrow morning. Things are at a standstill until then, but there was something good about standing in the building today before the rest of the change happens.

Since we heard of The Great Pennsylvania Car Fire and it’s wrath upon the gear and other things of Candy Claws, we’ve been working behind these scenes to figure out good ways to help the Candies get back on their feet. The results are as follows:

• This coming Friday (7.16), 50% of sales will be donated to Candy Claws. The insurance co. is not covering the loss, so we must do our part. If you can’t make it in to buy things, you can donate here.
• Second – come August 13, we will host a benefit concert for the band featuring Candy Claws themselves, Ocean Floor, and Holly Faml’y. There will be a minimum $5 cover charge to get in. You can always give more.

Therefore, we will see you on Friday when you buy things to support the boys and girls victimized by the Great Pennsylvania Car Fire. Man oh man do I wish the title to this post was a joke.

Our friends in Candy Claws have been playing at Everyday Joe’s since their mothers had to drop them off for their sets. They have not always been Candy Claws. They have been many bands. And their voices have changed.

As Candy Claws, though, our friends have found a bit of national success. This success requires touring. This touring requires cars.

As the band drove through Pennsylvania on Saturday, black smoke began pouring out of their engine. They quickly pulled over and popped the hood. Upon seeing what they saw, they retreated down the highway on foot. This is where we now enter picture form:

Thankfully, no one was hurt. The gas tank was pretty full, so the fire burned for some time. That burning fire consumed the band’s gear and CD’s. They have been loaned a van by a delightful farming family so they can get to their shows in NYC, where the record label has loaner gear waiting for them.

The band is still waiting to hear back from the folks-os at the insurance co. RE:money for gear destroyed in a car fire. From what bassist Mr. Jon Alonzo tells me, they aren’t sure what – or if – things will be replaced. With that in mind, and with generosity in your heart,  please go support the good people of Candy Claws on the rest of their summer tour. Dates are below. We plan on hosting a benefit show for them come mid-August. Deets on that soon. For now, check the dates like a good chap should and preorder the soon to be released Hidden Lands on CD or LP.
