Mile High Showdown Throwdown Wrap-Up

We love the people of Novo Coffee. It is a very large part of the reason we carry their nicely roasted beans at Everyday Joe’s. We also love when they throw parties.

The Mile High Showdown Throwdown at the Novo Roastery last week was a fine fine time. We got to give/receive many hugs to/from fine coffee folks we hadn’t seen in some time. And perhaps it isn’t good to identify them as coffee folks. Probably better to identify them as fine, fine people that we’ve had the pleasure of meeting because of coffee things over the past year. Seeing them has some ideas brewing (punny) in our heads so we might see them more. We’ll talk about that later.

All in all, the Everyday Joe’s family was represented by about 20 folks at the party, many of them pouring in the latte art throwdown. THE Ben Thomas and THE Josh Taves made it to the semis, while Chris drew an ace in the first round and decided to take his shirt off as a distraction technique. It didn’t work.

Save The World: Women Of The Devadasi

99.99% of the time, the folks who volunteer at Everyday Joe’s are here because their heart desires to take care of people. When they move on from behind the bar or soundboard, it is not because their heart has changed but because it is being called to other places.

Rachel Robichaux is a good lady/Everyday Joe’s volunteer. Her heart has taken her & her camera to India as of late, where she has found herself in love with/heart-broken by the women of the Devadasi system – “in which girls are dedicated to the goddess Yellamma for a lifetime of ritualized prostitution.”

Injustice exists all over the planet earth. Rachel is helping to fight this particular injustice. She has a short essay & photo collection up on JPG Magazine’s site. If her piece receives enough votes, it will be featured in the print edition of JPG. Please head over, vote, and help spread the word of something that needs to be squelched.

This Is The Future. It Is Fast.

Meet: Joshua Schwarz.

He has been a member of the Everyday Joe’s family since right near birth, as have his two younger brothers. His parents Christian and Shari are two of the hearts that sat in a small room 11 years ago and cast the vision for the Everyday Joe’s & Timberline Oldtown organization.

Apparently hearts bursting with Family love for the world turn out children with very accute hand/eye coordination. The video below is a video of the future. It is fast. 14th in the world fast:

Free Music Friday: Night Beds (EP & Bonus Track)

Every Fire; Every Joy

I have been looking for this for months.

Not Night Beds in particular, but the new music that might move me to listening on repeat. Here it is and it is free.

Our friend Zach Tipton (Young Coyotes, I Am The Dot) told the good people of Night Beds that we of Everyday Joe’s would enjoy their tunes. Night Beds then sent us a little note with links to their free EP Every Fire; Every Joy and to a bonus track featuring Mr. Tipton, “Good Person.”

I keep listening and it all just keeps getting better. In the Everyday Joe’s universe, Night Beds might done be this year’s You, Me, and Apollo. A show with those two on the bill would be oh so vibey.

You can listen to “Good Person” and the entirety of Every Fire; Every Joy below. Once you are convicted by their summer-nights-on-the-back-porch-good-times feel, get your digital paws on the former here and the latter here.

Everyday Joe’s Is 7

Seven years certainly feels like something.

It isn’t one of those monumental years. It’s a growing year. It’s the “Hey, I’m in first grade and I go to school all day long”  year. You feel a bit older, but can still remember the days when you stayed home all day and naps were required. You start to form an independent identity, but start to understand you can’t do it all on your own.

Year seven at Everyday Joe’s was a year of change: switching coffee roasters (Intelligentsia to Novo), building a new coffee bar, changing the paint on the walls, renewing our focus on quality, renewing our focus on the stewardship of things, making our drinks smaller in light of both of those things, changes in leadership structure…

It could keep going. Lots of change. Many changes. Or perhaps they are tweaks or refinements. Regardless, they were not and are not changes or tweaks or refinements independent of each other. They all function – and we all function – in the realm of serving & taking care of each other better. Constantly better. Encouraging refinements in each other to that end.

And this is still the purpose of Everyday Joe’s: to be a benefit to Fort Collins. To be a place of service and relationship and hope and Love. It is not always easy…and we catch ourselves with our eyes on the wrong things and we encourage refinements. You encourage refinements, perhaps without even knowing it. Thank you for that.

Imparting on year 8 and storing year 7 in the memory banks, it is safe to tell you that we are more secure in our identity than ever. It is not an identity in coffee or concerts or visual art – though those are all things that are crucial parts of it. It is an identity that will take us where Everyday Joe’s and it’s family needs to go. We just need to be honest with ourselves. And we need to listen.

We celebrate the past seven years and we hope to go into the rest not thinking we know it all, but knowing we’ll continue to be refined. Thanks for being here with us.

love.

The Exciting List

There has been giant influx of exciting newsies (not the Disney movie, but the tidbits) lately. Enough that methinks a list is in order. Perhaps The Exciting List will be a recurring dealy here on Appendix E-J, and perhaps it won’t. If it is, the first of many follows. If it isn’t, enjoy the one-off.

THE EXCITING LIST!

  • You Me and Apollo (Brent Cowles) has relocated to Fort Collins. This is something good, as he will hopefully be available to play here and the world will learn of his prowess in the musical realms. Start learning with your ears here.
  • The Blackthorn Project is releasing a new album. They have committed to not going into debt making the record (respectable) and are taking pre-orders now to help offset post-production costs. Give your bit and begin to hotly anticipate the delivery of the album.
  • We have two “Heart In A Cup” t-shirts left. Then they are gone forever. Both are size small. If you are somewhere where you would need then shipped, I will make it happen.
  • Have you heard of [slash] seen these babies? They are movin’. Don’t delay.
  • The World Barista Championships are June 23 – 25. They are in England. If you want to front the cost to travel there and be our sideline reporter, go for it. Otherwise, we’ll be streaming the most of it at Everyday Joe’s.

Killer list, yeah? If you have stuff you’d like us to add, let me know in the comments.

It’s happening. Very soon.

On June 16, Mr. Denison Witmer will make his Everyday Joe’s debut. Or perhaps we should say that Everyday Joe’s will make it’s Denison Witmer debut. We respect the man that much.

In order to entice you/give you something to do in the hotness/remind you to buy your tickets in advance, Mr. Witmer has left an audio treat for you here. Enjoy “Carry The Weight (acoustic)” then get your tickets done bought. They’re $8 in advance or $10 at the door. Get them online or at Everyday Joe’s. Everyday Joe’s Travel Mug Travels: Minot, ND

There is a town near Canada. It is called Minot. It is where good people come from.

One of these people: Darren Fred. He is part of the Everyday Joe’s family. He is the pastor of Timberline Oldtown. He can grill a hot dog with the best of ‘em (Hebrew National, preferably).

Darren & his clan traveled back to Minot recently, Everyday Joe’s travel mug included. The mugs have been on the market for two weeks now, and we’re proud to see them spreading across the continent. Mr. Fred has supplied The Appendix with video of his contribution to this spreading. He does not discriminate against coffee, simply the vessels he drinks it out of.

Please submit your Everyday Joe’s Travel Mug Travels. Just click here.

Twitteresting: New Aaron Strumpel E.P. REALLY SOON

This little tidbit popped up in the good ol’ Twitter stream a few days ago from @aaronstrumpel:

http://bestc.am/hbWEh Just wrote a three song ep to be titled “5.25.10″ due out next week. :)

Then this hotness (along with much more you can see here) appeared on Mr. Strumpel’s Facebook presence:

29229_393313058042_503523042_4196349_2443883_n

That’s a Wurlitzer. And that’s a trumpet. And that’s a guitar neck forest. And that’s a man we love so much.

Really, you probably know we love him so much. You probs also know we are eagerly anticipating the release of Birds later this summer. We know you are eagerly anticipating it.

Sounds like we’ll all have something to hold us over soon. Or hold our ears and hearts over, at least. The good people of Everyday Joe’s will be sure to let you know when there is more to be known. Chances are there already is more to be known. Chances are we already know it. Chances are you should be alert, young ones.
