Audio Treat: Aaron Strumpel “Right Thru”

Our good & lovely friend Aaron Strumpel will celebrate the release of his award-winning album Elephants with a show at Everyday Joe’s on Friday night. It will feature Aaron & eight (!) of his closest friends on stage making a noise you will not soon forget.

So epic.

Mr. Strumpel has been kind enough to send the song “Right Thru” to us for you. Listen to that below, then watch him perform the song below that. Then we’ll see you on Friday and it will completely rage your face. You can listen to more of Aaron’s new tunes over at his Myspace.

144 S. Mason Hits The Big Screen

8 years ago, Timberline Church bought into the idea of a church in Oldtown Fort Collins. Timberline Oldtown (formerly Joshua’s Crossing) was planted.

6 years ago, Timberline Oldtown bought into the idea of a non-profit coffee house as a form of non-traditional outreach to the community…focusing on Love & relationship rather than forceful theology. Everyday Joe’s was planted.

This past weekend, we were invited over to the Mothership (aka Timberline) to give an update about the going ons around here. This meant speaking 4 times to a total of around 3000 folks. Exhausting and fun.

To kick things off, we showed a video on several very large screens that made me look like I was 7 feet tall. Below is a timelapse of 24 hours in our building…spanning Sunday morning church, a special Sunday evening concert featuring David Bazan & Karli Fairbanks, and a monday morning at Everyday Joe’s. Enjoy and we love you.

David Bazan Comes To Everyday Joe’s on Sunday

Don’t know if you knew this, but David Bazan (formerly Pedro The Lion) is playing here on Sunday, April 19. He will be here. His beard will be here. I am confident that you will be here…to hear.

In order to bolster my confidence in you, I am posting a video for everyone’s viewing pleasure. It is a clip from Bazan’s recent appearance on the radio program Phoning It In. Then, you can buy tickets from the link below that, or take your chances at the door (they open at 7 pm).

2009 World Barista Championship begins Thursday

Back in March the United States Barista Championship took place with Intelligentsia’s Mike Phillips as the champeen and 3 other Intelli baristas placing in the top 5. That is a fairly good showing, and we’re proud to brew Intelligentsia’s beans.

On Thursday (April 16), Mr. Phillips will take his US title to Hotlanta, GA and compete in the World Barista Championship along with representatives from 50 other countries. Here are the folks I am most intrigued by & the reason behind my intrigue:

  • Mike Phillips (USA)- He works for our roaster and talks like he should host the most interesting show on PBS.
  • Flor De Maria Gochez (El Salvador)- My favorite coffee of 2008 was from El Salvador. Delicious things win points with me.
  • Oleksandr Khadzhy (Ukraine)- I just finished reading Everything Is Illuminated…easily the most heartbreaking piece of literature I have ever ingested. It takes place in the Ukraine.
  • Melanie D’Lores Nunes (Belgium)- Everyday Joe’s is located in Fort Collins, CO – home to the New Belgium Brewing Company and the delicious Olive Street Belgian Bakery.
  • Gwilym Davies (UK)- The man has a nicely maintained beard and that is something I respect/practice.

The Championship runs through Sunday, and the whole dealy-do can be watched online for free below:

New Music From Gregory Alan Isakov = See You Saturday

To me, there is not much better than when a musician’s voice is as good an instrument as the one they happen to be playing. You’d think this would come naturally, but it very often does not (names could be mentioned…but I don’t want to start any scuffles). Names that do fit the “voice is as good an instrument as any” category are Ryan O’Neal (Sleeping At Last), Matthew Perryman Jones, Nathaniel Rateliff (Born In The Flood), Karen Peris (The Innocence Mission), and Glen Hansard (The Frames). There are more, but I need to get to making my point.

Two whose voices are smooth like a nice glass of whiskey and warm my innards just the same are Aaron Espe and Gregory Alan Isakov. And looky here, they’re both playing at Everyday Joe’s on Saturday night:

I have been fairly giddy concerning this show for several months, as have you I am sure. To increase that excitement exponentially, our friends over at The Mountain Tempo have posted a new song by Mr. Isakov over on their fine, fine blog. To hear it, click on his lovely South African face below.

Handmade Militia Spring Market: Call For Entries

Back in November, we became quite excited about the Handmade Militia…a group of local artisans celebrating all things handmade and even hosting seasonal markets to sell the product of their handiwork.

Well, I’m excited to let you know that the Handmade Militia Spring Show will be taking place on May 2 at Everyday Joe’s. We’re normally closed Saturday during the day, but we love & appreciate these folks so much that we jumped at the chance to help them out.

Here’s the details from Susan & Whitney, the minds behind the militia:

How To Enter

1. www.HandmadeMilitia.com to download application.
2. Fill out application
3. Add a few photos of your work
4. Send back to me [susan@susanhazelrich.com] before the 15th of April
5. We will reply to you on or before April 20th

Gritty details: Booth spaces will be roughly 8′ by 10′ and are $95 a piece. Location you ask? Everyday Joe’s located on Mason Ave. in Old Town.

First time show jitters?
Don’t be nervous we at Handmade Militia are just about as friendly as a couple of koala bears. Okay, so I couldn’t really think of a good example. Anyhow, email us and let us know if you have any questions.

Extra credit?? Forward this info onto all your creative friends. We are super excited about the response we have had thus far but are certain there are gems just like yourselves out there who’ve yet to apply.

Questions? Concerns? Don’t hesitate to email me (Susan).

Sounds like a pleasant time, huh? They still have 22 spaces available, so if you have something you have made and want to distribute to the masses, do yourself a favor and enter. If not, come down on May 2 and support local people making things.

Kind words for Aaron Strumpel aka The Wail

It has been mentioned here a few times over the past month that our friend Aaron Strumpel won Calvin College’s Bandspotting contest and that his new album Elephants is superb and that because the album is superb and because he won Bandspotting he got to perform at the 2009 Festival of Faith and Music, opening up for Over The Rhine.

Said festival took place this past weekend. I have been wondering how things went for Mr. Strumpel. Luckily, Bandspotting judge Andy Whitman maintains a wonderful blog – Razing The Bar – and took time this morning to recant the festivities. He has this to say in regards to Aaron’s set:

“We hung out with Aaron Strumpel, from Colorado, and Todd and Angie Fadel, from Portland, Oregon, who somehow got together to lay down the most outstanding musical set of the conference, a raw, punk-like, discordant, and often strikingly beautiful take on The Psalms. Or, the Wail.”

The rest of the post that brackets this statement says some good things regarding pain & love & God. Read the rest here.

Volunteers Do Things: Off To Costa Rica

When you are an organization powered mostly by volunteers, it is a safe bet to assume that the folks around you have hearts that desire to do things for others.

Throughout the year, we see volunteers leave to head somewhere else and help other people. To serve the global community. Maggie Canty took off last summer to serve with YWAM in Switzerland. Now, she is leading a team to Costa Rica to assist with the relief efforts surrounding the January earthquake.

“My team will be headed to Costa Rica, where we will be helping earthquake refugees in several different ways, from working on houses to passing out food to watching children and wherever else there is need.

And eating a lot of bananas. At least that’s what I hear.”

You can read more about Maggie’s adventures beyond Fort Collins – past & present – over at her blog Marge At Large. She’s a good lady and we love her very much.
