The 2008 Everyday Joe’s 90/10 Benefit is just a little bit away! The annual show to benefit Everyday Joe’s will feature Dan Craig, The Riflemen, Aaron Espe, and LIfeboat Etiquette. In order to be properly prepared to enjoy the evening, we’ll spend the next few weeks introducing the artists to you. This week: The Riflemen
Rifles. They go bang. Sometimes they may just have a flag that pops out the end of them that states the action of “bang.”
Men who fire rifles. They can be referred to as Riflemen. Except in this case. I’m not sure any of the fellows you’re about to encounter have ever fired a rifle. A couple of them have respectable facial hair that might make them a respectable addition to any regiment, but that’s it. They do fire musical instruments at your hearing capabilities. What’s more, they look good doing it and it sounds nice.
Here’s a picture for proof of good looks:
See? What did I tell you. And that’s not even the whole band. Add Tyler Kellogg on drums (he’s wearing a shirt and tie most waking moments) and Jonathan Alonzo on bass (he’s wearing at LEAST a t-shirt at most waking moments), and you have the next cover of Tiger Beat.
Now here are some songs to cement my claims of nice sounding audio rounds fired at you:
“Notes Upon A Page” (live on KRFC)
Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.
“Cowboy” (live on KRFC)
Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.
Upon finishing that last song, I’m sure you’re in the mood to: a) hit the floor or b) watch some clips from the old television series The Rifleman. Well, I’ve got you covered. And the video below is even better if you listen to “Cowboy” while watching him do his business.

Just one more week to go! Next week I’ll introduce Dan Craig to those of you who haven’t had the pleasure of making his aquaintance. He believes in moustaches, beards, mandolins, and overall good feelings.

Any assemblance of good design will catch my eye…especially in poster or flier form. We have no shortage of posters & fliers here at 144 S. Mason – promoting both our events and others around town. What’s more exciting than assemblance of good design though, is when the good design is promoting something good and exciting and worthwhile…though I guess that is subjective. But not here. My iron fist is down on the table.
The other day I was perusing the community events board and noticed this little diddy:

Oh, the holiday craft fair. Hand-knit tea cozies, clothes-pin Rudolph tree ornaments, pine cones with glitter glued on here and there. More often than not, if I see a sign for a holiday craft fair I make ever y effort to immediately head in the opposite direction. Especially before the better half sees the advert.
BUT WAIT! You, Handmade Militia, have charmed me. Charmed me with your wonderful poster and cursive writing. It’s good to see things like this popping up in Fort Collins, and I give my whole-hearted ringing endorsement of this craft fair, though that endorsement most likely holds little clout with anyone. Either way, go to the craft fair and support local folks by purchasing their handmade goods. Plus, Cafe Ardour will be serving beverages and we love them as well.
It’ll be crafty like ice is cold. Details:

The 2008 Everyday Joe’s 90/10 Benefit is coming soon! The annual show to benefit Everyday Joe’s will feature Dan Craig, The Riflemen, Aaron Espe, and LIfeboat Etiquette. In order to be properly prepared to enjoy the evening, we’ll spend the next few weeks introducing the artists to you. This week: Mr. Aaron Espe
Aaron Espe is a quiet man. He recently moved to Fort Collins from Denver. That means he went from being one of the best songwriters in Denver to one of the best songwriters in Fort Collins. He is a quiet man that makes enjoyable music. Quiet musicians are more often than not some of the best, as they leave what they have to say for songs. Support for this statement may be found by referencing The Wheel, Matthew Perryman Jones, and Pigeon John.
A scientist would now add Aaron Espe to this list under the category labeled “proof.”
I have just been handed the audio & visual evidence for this proof by our resident scientist. Here you go:
Listen to “Small Town”

Wait, I was just handed one more thing. A video of some young fellow covering Aaron Espe’s “Settling.” Being covered by young fellows generally means that you have arrived.

You may remember our collective excitement last week when our coffee shipment came in and the Black Cat was in beautiful black bags. What’s more, there was proper reasoning behind the bags.
Well, the people at Intelligentsia Coffee & Tea did not feel like stopping there. They have also redesigned the labels:
Oh yeah. Check ‘em out. Here’s a handy explanation:
“You will notice our bag labels have changed just a bit. To provide even more information about our single origin coffees, we now include farm and producer information. To improve the print quality of our labels, we moved from white ink to black and switched our grey labels to red for regular and blue for decaf. You really want to know why we changed them? We think that these labels better reflect the quality of the product in the bag…and we hope that you do as well.”
Oh man. Changes with purpose make me excited enough to do a short jig. Especially when those changes involve labels that look so good I would wear them as clothing.

In order to be properly prepared to enjoy the evening, we’ll spend the next few weeks introducing the artists to you. This week: Ryan Hollen…aka Lifeboat Etiquette.
The lifeboat. It saves some people. The Titanic didn’t have enough of them. This one has a substantial and respectable beard.
Exhibit A:
And Exhibit B:
What does the beard matter, though? Shouldn’t this be about this man’s tunes? Not his fantastic facial hair? Indeed. But you see, bearded troubadours have a penchant for making music that is listenable exponentially… i.e. Iron & Wine, Fleet Foxes, Bon Iver, and ZZ Top.
Fortunately for the world, Lifeboat Etiquette and his beard are no exception. The Fort Collins native is quite good, and thanks to the good people at the Internet, we have audio and video as evidence.
Please watch Red Threads:

So and so….and so.
Each Thursday, our weekly shipment of coffee arrives from Intelligentsia Coffee & Tea. They roast the beans Tuesday, and two days later they delight your pallate and blow your tastebuds’ minds. Thank you Intelligentsia, we love you.
Yesterday our Black Cat Espresso arrived in this:
Instead of this:
Resulting in this reaction from Diana:
And this reaction from Chris:
Why all the excitement? A few (two) reasons:
A word from Intelligentsia about the Black Cat Project:
“Black Cat Espresso is one of our proudest accomplishments…and after 13 years of pulling great shots of espresso, we are re-examining everything about this coffee to make it even better.”
More concisely, this is the “never ending pursuit to re-invent espresso.”
This is something that is very exciting and intriguing. There is a lot more info concerning the project – much more than this blog can handle – over at blackcatcoffee.com. Head over and read and watch and look forward to things to come.

An exciting and important time in the yearly cycle of Everyday Joe’s has come upon us – The Everyday Joe’s 90/10 Benefit. It’s actually a little later in the cycle this year than in the past…but I do believe that is a good thing.
Cycles…they indicate change. Transition. Life and death. It is happening with the beetles and the pine trees. Things have to reset so new things can begin.
Each year, the 90/10 Benefit is meant to be a musical picture of what Everyday Joe’s stands for. That is, community and relationships and the fostering and nurturing of those things. The last three years (this will mark benefit numero four), this picture has been accomplished by drawing upon a community of musicians that helped to establish the musical foundation of Everyday Joe’s. Many of them were from Boulder & Louisville: Trace Bundy, Katie Herzig, The Blackthorn Project, and Aaron Strumpel to name a few.
Some from other places: Listener, Luke Flowers, Paul Pavlik.
And good friends from Fort Collins: Josh Dillard, Winderous Igloos, DJ Shaggz, The Igloos.
These folks, along with the hundreds of others that have played the stage at 144 S. Mason on a Friday or Saturday night, have resulted in the growing of quite a musical family tree. What’s more fantastic is that the tree continues to grow and sprout new branches. The beetles have not gotten to this tree yet.
2008 at Everyday Joe’s has been marked by transition. Many of the musicians who began their careers playing here a few times a year have now found regional & national & international success. Having them play here once or twice a year is now a treat. This has also made room for more musicians to make their way into the building and climb onto the tree and carve out their place as part of the family. Now that they’re here, it seems like they always have been.
At this point, it is proper and appropriate to present you with the pertinent information concerning the 2008 Everyday Joe’s 90/10 Benefit. Artistic representation is the most pleasant way to do this. Observe:
See, a tree. All that talk of trees and cycles did not go unwarranted.
Tickets are on sale now at Everyday Joe’s and online soon via www.everydayjoes.org. In the coming month, we will introduce the musicians to you one by one so you can have opportunity to grasp their goodness before they blow your mind.
We will see you all soon. Thank you for being part of the Everyday Joe’s family. You each have a branch on the tree.
love.
